Sept. 15, 2011 Update: Name changed, background fleshed out, and completely redrawn. It's been needing it for five years now.
In the past there existed a world that grew gems on its surface, gems that grew to unfathomable scales. This geological oddity of this otherwise barren planet was thought to be attributed to a rather mysterious substance that grew at the planet's northern pole. A vessel entered the planetary system where this world was found, and after examining its features for a time, the travelers decided to inhabit it. The world was designated Zylonnos by those colonists, and they went to work building a shell around the planet that would serve three purposes: 1. To make the rocky terrain easier to traverse across, 2. To make it easier to access, mine, and transport the gems that the planet grew, and 3. To make the world similar to their original home world, which still existed many light-years away.
After a time, some inhabitants started to notice the effects the mysterious substance at the pole had on the planet's geological activity, and they decided to build a research center over that pole. Access to it is restricted and monitored very closely along channels that run through the seemingly solid band of turquoise light that circles the pole.
After more time passed, the Zylonnian that would come to be known as Barrage began using his influence over the planet's materials to build the Barrage Utopia, the planet's only satellite. It orbits dangerously close to the planet, but keeps from crashing into it by correcting its course with propulsion when necessary. It is within this base that Barrage keeps a significant portion of the substance, where it can be experimented on without the watchful eyes of the research center's scientists looming about. Only Barrage knows what secrets it contains, as all other Zylonnians are kept out by force. This has made Barrage the enemy of the planet, but if he finds what he's looking for, the opinions of the Zylonnians below won't matter very much. Meanwhile, the researchers below diligently work to unlock the secrets they think the substance holds, and if they find it, they might be able to repel the malicious assault Barrage no doubt has planned.
